1) Learn new skills
Often people find the idea of learning a new language daunting – but starting a new language doesn’t mean you have to aim for fluency. If you’re planning a holiday abroad it can be as simple learning how to say hello and thank you, or as complicated as starting to string together a few sentences. The accessibility of online learning platforms makes it easy to pick it up where and when you want, apps like Duolingo are easy to use and are cheap to use. Languages not your thing? Lifehack has more inspirational new and low-cost hobby ideas.
2) Get active
People can be put off starting a new sport by the expense, but there are myriad of opportunities to get active and make new friends at little to no cost. From local running events like Parkrun to public tennis courts and swimming baths, there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy the summer sun (while it lasts). British Heart Foundation also has a list of the ’12 sports to try out this summer’ with advice on how to access free starter sessions, if a Saturday run doesn’t appeal!
3) Make a difference
A new hobby doesn’t have to be skills based, it can also be about finding a new community to help you develop as a person. Volunteering is a way of giving back to the community, while also pushing you outside of your comfort zone, and with so many charitable organisations in the UK to choose from, there is something for everyone… Check out available opportunities in your local area on Do-it and get started this summer when the sun is out.
